EC Chair was too antagonistic towards the NDC at Tuesday’s IPAC meeting—Analyst

October 2, 2024
Jean-Mensah

Political analyst Nana Piesie Anto believes the Electoral Commissioner’s posture at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, was too hostile to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Nana Piesie Anto stated that Madam Jean Mensa acts as if the EC is an autonomous body incapable of being held accountable.

He indicated that the comments of the EC boss appeared as if she targeted the opposition NDC and attempted to discredit it.

He also chastised the EC for allowing some political parties to directly attack the NDC for raising legitimate concerns, which the EC acknowledged and claimed to have addressed.

Piesie Anto, speaking on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM’s Nyankonton Mu Nsem, stated that the EC Chair’s comments targeted the NDC. She attempted to discredit them rather than address the underlying issues raised. When addressing the NDC, keep in mind that you will be addressing around 6 million Ghanaian voters as of 2020. I have also never seen a referee hold a press conference following a football game. The EC Chair should also keep in mind that she is working for the benefit of Ghanaians rather than for herself.

If you are an Electoral Commissioner and you are openly antagonistic towards a political party and ganged up against the party, you are not talking to the party but the 6 million supporters.’’

He questioned the EC Chair on why she is having armed military officers guarding her if she is credible and has not done anything untoward at the Commission.

“Why is the EC Commissioner having soldiers guard her at work and at home if she has done nothing wrong?” Afari Gyan was the EC Chair for many years, and we witnessed his activity. but never saw what we’re seeing now. The Electoral Commission is independent, but not autonomous. If you argue that the NDC did not provide any evidence, how did you address the issues? There is inconsistency in the EC to the extent where we were unable to conduct the district-level elections in one day and had to run them the following day.

He lambasted the parties that attacked the NDC at the IPAC meeting, questioning whether they even have the numbers to confront such a huge and influential opposition.

He noted that the EC Chair, when she was the head of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), campaigned for only parties with parliamentary representation to join the IPAC, but since taking over, she has failed to implement the same suggestion that she previously made to the EC.
