Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has stated that the free Senior High School (SHS) policy implemented by the NPP government has benefitted approximately 5.7 million children nationwide.
While addressing traditional leaders, clergy, imams, and constituents in the Sefwi Akontombra constituency as part of his campaign tour to the Western North Region, Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the policy, a 2016 campaign promise, ‘was initially dismissed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by John Dramani Mahama but ultimately delivered in 2017, marking a historic milestone’.
He noted that the policy has led to increased female enrolment, surpassing male enrolment, and additionally mentioned the distribution of computer tablets to teachers from kindergarten to senior high school and the restoration of nurses’ and teachers’ training allowances previously cancelled by the NDC government, among other implemented policies.
”The free SHS policy has yielded significant results, notably surpassing the number of male students with female enrollments. The policy has eradicated the prevalence of housemaids, thereby increasing secondary education accessibility. Furthermore, we’ve implemented the one student one tablet initiative for senior high school students.”
The Chief of Sefwi Akontombra, Okukudurofour Kwabena Ebeh, commended Dr. Bawumia and the NPP government for establishing the Akontombra rice factory under the one district, one factory initiative and urged him to ensure the completion of the ongoing Akontombra road construction project.
