Ablekuma Central New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Organiser Oliver Ofori Baah says the issue of illegal mining has become a threat to our human existence.
The activities of illegal miners, he lamented, have destroyed several water bodies and threatened food security.
As someone who was a miner and rented equipment for miners but had his machines destroyed under the NDC noted that illegal mining is a “no go area.”
He posted that the NPP and National Democratic Congress (NDC) are guilty culprits of illegal mining.
Oliver Ofori Baah indicated that some members from both parties are deeply involved in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
“Illegal mining is a no-go area. It is not something good we have to entertain. It is a threat to our human existence, food security, the environment, and water bodies. Both the NDC and NPP are part of illegal mining. They cannot excise themselves from illegal mining,” he said on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
He also underscored the need for our traditional rulers to make efforts to stop illegal mining.
According to him, as custodians of the various communities, they have a responsibility to protect their lands and prevent illegal miners from mining.
Meanwhile, he has also alleged that the majority of young people who participated in the Democracy Hub demonstration and engaged in the lawlessness were associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He said he has friends who are known NDC members who joined the demonstration with the aim of creating trouble.
He condemned the demonstrators for engaging in lawlessness.
He said demonstrating over issues is a constitutional right, but “to use that opportunity in engaging in lawlessness, destroy property, and remove a police car key were excesses we have to condemn. That is why they were dragged to court and remanded. They have to show remorse so when they return to court after serving their remand, the law may be lenient with them”.
