The Public Services Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana, National Identification Authority (NIA) Division’s Divisional Executives Council, strongly condemns suggestions that their strike action was politically driven, deeming such insinuations insulting and absurd.
The union declared an industrial strike beginning yesterday, October 7, 2024.
A notice issued by the aggrieved workers on Sunday, October 6, noted that the strike is a result of the employer’s failure to implement their newly approved scheme of service.
The aggrieved workers informed the public that they will not call off their industrial action until the agreed scheme of service is implemented.
Divisional Secretary, Adu Kyeremeh Kwabena, speaking on the issue, said they have exhausted all avenues in having their issues resolved.
He explained on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM that the failure of the government to operationalise the newly approved Scheme of Service (SoS) has compelled them to take this decisive action.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that it would be an insult to them for anyone to politicise their action and accuse them of being influenced by a political party.
”It is most ridiculous and purely an insult for anyone to make such claims. I have personally attended five universities, upgraded by skills with over two masters, and someone will make such comments. Am I not qualified enough to know when I am struggling and will demand something better than what is happening? It is insulting to tell someone who is unable to pay bills, the school fees of the children, rent, and other activities that he or she is being politically influenced to embark on an activity that is aimed at improving their working conditions. If you know the calibre person I am, you will not make such a suggestion. We have exhausted all available means, and yet we have been ignored. We are fighting for our future. Go to the Office of Vice President, the Chief of Staff, National Security, and the Speaker of Parliament, and you will see the number of letters we have sent there.’’
He maintained that the failure to implement the agreed scheme of service is a blatant breach of trust and a direct attack on the well-being of the over 1,000 members.
