According to educationist Matthew Nyaaba, the use of artificial intelligence in education has both benefits and problems.
He claimed that while artificial intelligence in education has the ability to provide possibilities and benefits, it also has drawbacks and harmful consequences.
He stated that the incorporation of AI benefits both students and teachers, but how do we ensure that the bad impacts do not outweigh the benefits?
Matthew Nyaaba stated that AI is assisting some students in doing their assignments, and we must take steps to ensure the student does not abuse it.
‘‘I strongly believe AI has come to stay, and we must adopt strategies to benefit from the advantages. We cannot stay away from it,’’ he said.
He is advocating for the use of AI in teaching and learning about culture and context-specifics.
‘’English is not our first language, and our students and children are familiar with our local languages, making it difficult for them to appreciate the language that is used in teaching and learning. Our children are able to express themselves. And so we can make use of AI in changing learning outcomes. If you should ask a student to narrate an incident he or she had witnessed in the local language, such as Twi, that student will give you a perfect narration, but when you ask that same student to do that in English, it may be difficult.’’
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science and technology that focuses on developing machines, systems, or software programs capable of performing tasks that would normally require human intelligence.
They include reasoning, problem solving, learning, perception, natural language comprehension, and decision-making.
‘’If we are able to design our systems in such a manner that incorporates our local languages in education, we will make significant progress. We can use it to translate several concepts in the field of education, including science, so our children and students will understand topics far better,’’ he said in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
He stressed the importance of weighing the benefits of artificial intelligence in education against the potential drawbacks. It will require careful planning. When used correctly, AI can empower educators, accelerate learning, and personalise concepts quickly and easily.”
Matthew Nyaaba is a second-year Ph.D. candidate in Teacher Education and Elementary Education at the University of Georgia’s Mary Frances Early College of Education, with a background in student affairs. Previously, he served as a lecturer at Gambaga College of Education and UDS Tamale.
