Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has suggested the Speaker summon the officials of the Electoral Commission and other state agencies involved with the organisation our elections top and provide details on their preparedness.
He specifically indicated the Speaker must direct the Committee of Special Budget to, as a matter of urgency, engage with the Electoral Commission (EC), inviting the Chairperson and other officials of the EC, including the Interior Minister and Inspector General of Police, to share with the committee their road map for free, fair, and transparent elections.
The former Minority Leader said that the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections is crucial, and stakeholders ought to be responsible in their utterances.
Haruna Iddrisu maintained that, with respect to the electoral body, he has a piece of information to the effect that even after expanding the electoral polling stations, the EC is only procuring an additional 8,000 to 10,000 BVDs, which are woefully inadequate.
He requires disclosure on the quantity of power banks obtained by the EC and the effectiveness of biometric devices for the December 7, 2024 general elections, ensuring the integrity of the electronic voting system and preventing potential electoral fraud through manual voting.
