Political analyst Alex Emmanuel Nti states that the NPP Members of Parliament’s boycott of the House is a strategic move to prevent a political tsunami, triggered by Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to declare four seats vacant.
The analyst said by the new decision, the now majority side of the house, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), will use their numbers to repeal some of the taxes Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to scrap.
Afenyo-Markin, who is also the leader of government business in Parliament, declared on Thursday, October 17, that the NPP MPs will boycott sitting until the Supreme Court has determined the pending matter.
Mr. Emmanuel Nti said by the new ruling, the NDC MPs would take immediate steps to abolish the e-levy once they reconvene in Parliament.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said the MPs may introduce private members’ bills to amend or repeal tax laws.
”The NPP’s decision to boycott sitting is a terrible idea, but I’m sure they know what the consequences will be. They are aware that if they participate in the House, the NDC will use the opportunity to repeal all of the obnoxious taxes that their candidate has promised to scrap. I’m sure they’ll reconsider that decision later because it will have an impact on them. The government can present business in the House, but whether it succeeds or fails is another issue.
”I will encourage the NPP MPs to find a solution and return to parliament. They should return to parliament. We have had some difficult times under this government, and NPP MPs are concerned that NDC MPs will use their position to change many of them. From now until December, the NDC will use their numbers to repeal the e-levy, betting tax, and all other taxes that Bawumia has promised to eliminate before the elections. When they do this, Bawumia’s policies will be rendered useless. The NPP is now afraid of the shadow they have cast.
He added that “the NPP MPs should return to parliament and find a way to collaborate with the NDC MPs.” They should reach an agreement and play a win-win game for the sake of Ghana. This is why we voted for them. They should just go to Parliament and work for the country, regardless of what is going on. If Ghanaians discover that NPP MPs are doing the right thing, they will support them. “You can’t escape your own shadow or the karma you’ve created.”
