It’s absurd to accuse me of ordering violent attacks when I’m the vulnerable one – Maamle Morrison

October 28, 2024
Hon.-Cynthia-Mamle-Morrison-1

Cynthia Maamle Morrsion, Member of Parliament for Agona West, believes it is absurd to blame her for the shooting incident that occurred in the constituency during a campaigning activity.

The MP denied having any involvement in the incident, as some supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have claimed.

The Agona West NPP Constituency Nasara Coordinator, Haruna Rashid, has allegedly been shot and in a critical condition during a campaign clash in Agona Nyarkrom, Central Region.

Rashid was travelling with Agona West NPP Parliamentary Candidate Chris Arthur’s convoy when the incident happened around 9 p.m.

Three other people were injured.

Information available indicates that supporters of Chris Arthur and Cynthia Morrison, a rival candidate, crossed paths while campaigning in the same area.

Tensions reportedly rose when Mr. Arthur’s convoy came across a roadblock allegedly set up by Ms. Morrison’s supporters.

However, when asked about the allegations, the MP categorically denied them, stating that she had no knowledge of the incident and cannot be held liable for it.

Madam Morrison speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she said, ‘’I was at Nyaakrom for a campaign activity. I had informed the police of the activity. I had no knowledge the PC for the NPP was in the area. After the program, we were on our way and realised the T junction had become a one-way due to the damage in the area. So we had to use the available bride in the area. I had no idea the PC of the NPP was also in the same area. I had no idea there had been shootings. I was on my way when I heard gunshots had been fired and three people had been injured. I then delegated someone to go to the hospital to see those who had been affected.

I later received a call from Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who claimed that my security guard had killed the NPP Nasara Coordinator. I was surprised and asked him how that was possible given that I was with the guard and had not seen him fire a gun. My security guard was with me, so he could not have done it. Then he changed the story, claiming that one of my followers might have killed the coordinator. This turned nasty, so I had to turn off my phone. I had to visit the hospital after learning that the Nasara Coordinator had been injured and was being treated,” she told host Kwabena Agyapong.

She further revealed that the false news about the death of the Nasara Coordinator spread like wildfire, prompting several people from the Zongo communities to storm the police station with clubs and sticks with the aim of attacking her.

She said the Assembly member who had sent the coordinator was attacked by the angry people and had his car vandalised while sustaining injuries.
When asked if she believes she was the target, the MP said, ‘’I can confirm that. I don’t have any evidence to that effect and so cannot confirm that’’.

Madam Maamle Morrison admitted that she has faced several intimidations and attacks since she declared her intention to contest as an independent candidate.

‘’I am shocked I am being accused of killing someone. It is absurd for anyone to accuse me of having my guard kill someone. Do I look like someone who can wield a gun and go to the extent of firing it to kill another person? Why would I do that? I am not a violent person, and even children in my constituency can confirm this. The want to engage in acts and blame me for that because how they can turn around and accuse me of being the one who ordered this violent incident is absurd. I am the vulnerable, and the whole system is against me, so how can I fire a gunshot or order guns to be fired in the midst of the people who came to support me?’’
