The Bawku crisis may disrupt the upcoming general elections if left unresolved – Analyst

October 28, 2024
Saani-Adib

According to security analyst Mr. Adib Saani, the renewed clashes in Bawku, which have led to the deaths of some people, are very unfortunate and disturbing.

Mr. Saani said he has received videos of the incident and can only refer to them as gory.

He disclosed that he saw in the video of someone being burnt alive, a situation he lamented was terrible.

The approach being used by authorities in resolving the crisis in Bawku, he said, was ineffective because it has not resolved the situation, which keeps escalating.

Speaking in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said, ‘’Information reaching me indicates that the joint police and military sent to the area are not intervening in the situation. At a point, there were gunshots fired for three straight days, and yet, the soldiers deployed there did not intervene’’.

When host Kwabena Agyapong asked of his proposed solutions to resolve the Bawku crisis, he said, ‘’The Bawku crisis is a multidimensional problem that requires multidimensional solutions.” We cannot adopt only one strategy in dealing with the problem. We need to ask ourselves why they are fighting. They are fighting over chieftaincy, and we need to address that. Two, there is also the proliferation of small arms and large weapons, partly because of the porous nature of our borders and the activities of criminal networks that are to import these guns into the area. We also have to deal with the proliferation of the guns. Three, the soldiers sometimes retrieve these smuggled arms, but we get new ones always entering, so why don’t we find a way to deal with the entry of the new ones’’.

He warned the situation could affect the organisation of the December 7, 2024 general elections, and our authorities must deal with it as soon as possible.

He emphasised the importance of authorities addressing the issue of unemployment, improving education, and providing income-generating skills to youth in these areas, as there are several of them who are unemployed and engaging in violent activities without fully understanding the reasons for their actions.

”As things stand in Bawku, people have more to die for than to live for, which is unfortunate and has serious implications for our entire national security, particularly as we prepare for the general elections. The Bawku conflict may disrupt the electoral process. If the security situation does not improve, the Bawku elections are likely to be affected,” he added.
