The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) at Atwima Nwabeagya District James Nketiah has confirmed that five persons have been officially confirmed dead after a vehicle they were travelling in fell into the Owabi River.
He stated that five occupants of the vehicle, including a mother and her child, were confirmed dead after they pulled from the river.
Speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said four of the occupants were first recovered from the river, but the minor, who was a five-year-old girl, was not found.
He revealed that the chiefs and traditional leaders in the area had to perform some rites before the body of the minor was removed.
He said the deceased persons were a mother, her two children, and two others (a teacher and another) whom she gave a lift.
According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle travelling from Dabaa to Akropong veered off the main road before overturning and crashing into the river.
The deceased have been identified as 40-year-old Seamstress, Helena, 28-year-old plumber, Boamah Gyasi Eric, 10-year-old school pupil, Lordina Yasan, 10, a pupil, and 41-year-old teacher, Rita Agyare.
The five-year-old has been identified as Doreen Yasan.
”We recovered four bodies yesterday but were unable to locate the body of a minor. We had to perform a few rituals early Wednesday morning before we could retrieve the minor’s body. So I can now confirm that the incident resulted in the deaths of five people. “It is an unfortunate incident,” he stated.
