Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who also serves as Chairman of the Police Council, believes the Ghana Police Service’s professional conduct during the registration and exhibition exercise should serve as a model for them in carrying out their duties professionally in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony for 430 newly promoted officers to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at the National Police Training School in Accra on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, Dr. Bawumia charged them with maintaining public trust, given their role in sustaining Ghana’s democracy.
He stated that as we prepare for the elections, we must take stock and remember that we have done this before, adding that Ghana has successfully organised elections since 1992, and this year’s election will be no exception.
He noted that as a nation, we have grown adept at managing elections, with the Ghana Police Service at the heart of the security taskforce, and that we are certain of a successful 2024 general election.
He was, however, quick to add that we must not be complacent and rest on our previous achievements since every election presents its own nuance situation.
“Every election presents its nuisance situation. We are, however, confident in the professionalism of the police. The police are always at the centre of elections in Ghana, and officers must act responsibly.
“The neutral, fair, and firm policing that we have had before should be the reason for optimism. The good conduct of officers during the recent voter registration and exhibition exercise also provides a great blueprint and confidence for the main elections.
“The Ghana Police Service, you have done it before, and we are counting on you to do it again by maintaining high professional standards in the discharge of your duties. You are setting the perfect tone for the nation to follow in delivering a peaceful and incident-free election.”
