We’ve not endorsed Maamle Morrison to contest as an independent candidate – Traditional Council

October 31, 2024
Hon.-Cynthia-Mamle-Morrison-1

The Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council has formally denied allegations of supporting Agona West Member of Parliament Cynthia Morrison’s decision to run as an independent candidate after losing the NPP parliamentary primaries.

According to the council, rumours have been circulating that spokesperson Kofi Osei falsely attributed the chiefs of Agona as the driving force behind Morrison’s independence.

Mankrado Nana Akufo IV clarified that these claims are untrue and cautioned the public against spreading misinformation.

He also urged Kofi Osei to retract his statement. Additionally, Nana Kwaku Esieni V, Acting Chief of Agona Swedru, admonished politicians to refrain from involving traditional leaders in their political activities and ensure peaceful campaigns as elections approach.

‘’We picked up information that Cynthia Morrison had stepped down. It was all over the news. Her aide, Kofi Sei, was called in a media interview, and he denied that the MP had stepped and that it was the traditional council and the chiefs who were supporting her to contest as an independent candidate. But I want to state categorically that the traditional council and the chiefs have not endorsed her. We have not supported her to contest as an independent candidate. The chiefs are all here, and I can state that we have not asked her to contest as an independent candidate. So we are asking the Ghanaian public to ignore the false claims. We want to let Ghanaians know that we have not endorsed Cynthia Maamle Morrison as an independent candidate.’’

We are therefore admonishing the public to ignore the false claims. The traditional council, the chiefs, have not asked the MP to contest as an independent candidate.

Additionally, Nana Kwaku Esieni V, Acting Chief of Agona Swedru, admonished politicians to refrain from involving traditional leaders in their political activities and ensure peaceful campaigns as elections approach.

‘’I want to stress that this is an election year and we are urging politicians to stop dragging chiefs into their partisan politics. Chiefs are not politicians, so stop dragging them into politics. We encourage them to focus on their messages that will influence Ghanaians to vote for them. We are also advising them to engage in a decent campaign and avoid any act that can undermine the stability, peace, and security of the state.”
