Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that peace is more than just the absence of conflict, but the presence of justice, fairness, and mutual respect.
The presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) believes that we must take proactive steps towards peace.
In his opinion, if we had been proactive in addressing tensions in our community, we would not have witnessed the tragedies that are currently taking place in Bawku.
He expressed concern about the number of deaths recorded and how families have been affected.
”I have always believed that we need a proactive attitude towards peace. Had we been proactive in addressing the tensions in our midst, perhaps we would not have faced tragedies such as those in Bawku, where lives are being lost and families are being shattered.”
Mr. Mahama was responding to his participation in the launch of the National Peace Campaign.
The Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), in collaboration with other ecumenical councils, launched a peace campaign on November 3, 2024, ahead of the December 7 general election.
The initiative is being implemented with the support of the Christian Council of Ghana, the Office of the National Chief Imam, and the National Association of Charismatic Christian Churches, among others.
The campaign is on the theme “Let peace prevail,” and it aims to promote peace before, during, and after the elections.
The candidate pledged that the NDC solemnly commit to upholding the values of dialogue, respect, and justice for all.

I suspended my campaign on Sunday to join the Ghana Pentecostal & Charismatic Council, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Office of the National Chief Imam, the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, and the National Association of Charismatic Christian Churches at the launch of a National Peace Campaign.
Peace is not merely the absence of conflict. It is the presence of JUSTICE, FAIRNESS, AND MUTUAL RESPECT.
We must not forget that true peace cannot exist without justice. We must all relentlessly pursue a just society where every Ghanaian feels secure and valued.
I have always believed that we need a proactive attitude towards peace. Had we been proactive in addressing the tensions in our midst, perhaps we would not have faced tragedies such as those in Bawku, where lives are being lost and families are being shattered.
On behalf of the National Democratic Congress, I solemnly commit to upholding the values of dialogue, respect, and justice for all.
We pledge to be the voice of the voiceless and to stand alongside every Ghanaian committed to peace—a peace grounded in justice.
