‘The 8th Parliament has not been efficient or effective due to the equal numbers and controversies’ – MP

The Member of Parliament for Bia West, Dr. Augustine Tawiah, says the eight parliament has not been able to discharge their duties effectively.

The lawmaker said there are outstanding issues that they have not been able to resolve, and it was unfortunate that had happened.

He stated that one of the reasons this had happened is the number of MPs on both sides of the house.

He said the house had witnessed several controversies, making it difficult for them to work.

‘’We have not been able to pass a number of bills and attend to urgent issues due to the controversies, especially surrounding our numbers. There are several bills we have not been able to pass. That is why it is my prayer that the ninth parliament would be much better. Whoever wins the elections should have a clear majority. We should have a parliament of a wider majority with the caucus having about 169 votes,’’ he told Rainbow Radio’s parliamentary correspondent Bohyeba Kwabena Afriyie.

Dr. Augustine Tawiah stated, “We do not want a similar situation where the number is the same. This will make it difficult for us to work efficiently. We’ve seen cases where MPs had to be transported in ambulances despite their illness in order to vote on issues before the House.

He underscored the need for the MPs to avoid their partisan political interests and rather focus on working in the interests of the constituents who voted for them.

”We have a responsibility to the people, not our political interests. We were elected to serve our constituents, and we must do so. We need the Peace Council, CSOs, Council of State, Christian Council, and others to intervene in the ongoing impasse. We must serve our people with dignity, selflessness, and dedication. “The people’s business is more prominent and important than partisan interests,” he said.
