The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed shock at President Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision to erect a statue of himself near the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi.
The former president argued that it was unfortunate for the president to commission a statue in his honour.
He believed that the best thing he could have done was to allow Ghanaians to appreciate or commend him and erect a statue in his honour.
He stated that it was improper for him to erect a statue in his honour after travelling around the country begging voters to try him and failing to deliver on his mandate.
He claims that the statue’s installation appears to be about self-promotion rather than commemorating significant regional achievements.
“Trial and error will always result in failure. That is how the President went around begging Ghanaians to try him, and it ended in failure. He doesn’t care anymore, so he went to Takoradi and had his statue erected there. This was unprecedented. Every president should be humble. People should be the ones to commend you on your work. You don’t go out and commission a statue and ask the public to honour you for your achievements. This has never happened before.
You then go to various universities and persuade them to award you an Honorary Doctorate while you are still President. The best thing to do is let your term expire, and if universities recognise your accomplishments, they will award you an Honorary Doctorate. He has twisted the hands of every university in the country into awarding him an Honorary Doctorate, but I have no idea where he is taking these doctorates. He is out of ideas. They have nothing left to offer Ghanaians. Someone whose government is already in office is running a campaign to provide Ghanaians with better leadership, change what his government has done, and put his ideas into action. What’s the level of confusion here?”
