Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Dr. Clement Apaak, has slammed his running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for claiming that it is a sin to vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He described the remarks as regrettable and should be condemned.
He questioned why the running candidate chose to fan the flames of religious sentiments, warning that it would not bode well for the country.
Speaking at a rally, Dr. Opoku Prempeh urged Muslims not to vote for the NDC because they do not have good intentions for Muslims.
He claimed that after the NDC took over from former President Agyekum Kufour, the late Mills and his vice president, John Dramani Mahama, stopped paying Makarata teachers.
He said it took the return of the NPP under President Akufo-Addo to restore it.
The former Energy Minister said Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has facilitated the construction and rehabilitation of 21 mosques.
He added that the only political party that broke down mosques across the country, adding that ‘’the NDC does not like Muslims. They only use Muslims for votes’’.
He further alleged that the late Mills and his vice refused to live at the Jubilee House because it was closer to Nima, which was heavily dominated by Muslims.
Dr. Clement Apaak responded by describing Dr. Mattew Opoku Prempeh’s assertions as outrageous, false, and likely to cause unnecessary tension.
He stated that politicians should avoid using religion or ethnicity in campaigning because they have the potential to cause division and intolerance.
He emphasised the need for Ghanaians to avoid politicians who are wary of divisive, religious, and ethnic sentiments emerging ahead of the elections, particularly from within the NPP camp.
Dr. Apaak contended that developing the country must transcend religious, ethnic, and political boundaries because it is a collective responsibility to manage the country.
He emphasised that religious flames will consume us if we do not extinguish them right away, and that we cannot afford or allow a few greedy politicians to undermine our security, stability, and peace in order to gain power.
‘’ In citing what the running mate of the NPP said, he said, ‘’In other words, if you are a Christian and you vote for the NPP, it is a sin!’’
