Ahmed Owusu-Konadu, Vice President of the Pan-African Ahmadiyya Muslim Association-UK, has emphasised the importance of holding leaders, particularly in Africa, accountable for bad leadership.
The Islamic scholar stated that he is dismayed when African governments show little sense of duty to their citizens, particularly those in deprived communities.
He stated that he becomes dissatisfied when travelling through remote areas without basic social amenities.
Speaking with Sir Richie on ‘As it is in Ghana’ on Rainbow Radio 92.4fm, UK, Owusu-Konadu African leaders who have failed to deliver their mandate must be held to account.
He said that leaders must implement initiatives that have a positive impact on the lives of their citizens.
When asked if he becomes dissatisfied when he goes to remote areas and they are extremely deprived of certain basic amenities, he answered, “Certainly that is very disappointing. I think every government that is doing such things should be held accountable because the whole essence of democracy is to make sure the people you are looking after are well catered for. In Islam, it is very simple and straight forward. The Almighty God has, and this is actually said by the Prophet Mohammed—peace be upon him—very categoric that every person who is actually being given a particular responsibility or a role in any group would be questioned by Almighty God as to how you looked after those servants that were under him or her.’’
He said leaders are to give the people equal justice and not favour others based on their affiliation, tribe, religion, or any other influences.
‘’This is not equal justice. We want to have fairness in our ruling. As a religious organisation, ours is to guide them (leaders). So you will notice that we have good relations with the politicians. We don’t favour any politician. We give equal platform to the politicians to come to us, and we also go to them to ensure that our people are governed with love, understanding, and equal opportunities for everyone.’’
He advised Ghanaians not to engage in any form of violence, even if a government is underperforming, because they will have the opportunity to vote them out in an election and replace them with those they believe can do better.
