Former President John Agyekum Kufour has advised Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to exercise strong leadership amidst the ongoing standoff in Parliament over majority seating arrangements.

The former president was unhappy at the ongoing impasse in the legislative house, stressing the need for the Speaker to show leadership.

He described the situation as an ‘’embarrassing’’ impasse that ought to be addressed so it does not undermine the integrity of the Speaker.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Kufuor emphasised the importance of Speaker Bagbin’s role in resolving the impasse and called on him to prioritise stability and decorum in the House.

In his view, if the situation is not addressed, it could negatively affect the reputation of the speaker.

Kufuor made an earnest appeal to the Speaker, recognising his unique position to resolve the parliamentary crisis. As the third most powerful person in the nation, occupying a strategic seat, he underscored the Speaker’s duty to secure a seamless transition in the remaining two months of the 8th Parliament.

Acknowledging the Speaker’s exemplary service, Kufuor cautioned that the prevailing disarray undermines his own legacy. He emphasised the necessity of addressing critical matters to ensure continuity of governance, expressing regret at the inability to accomplish this.

‘’The Speaker of Parliament must exhibit decisive leadership to address the alarming situation, as the ongoing events are tarnishing the institution’s image and threatening to undermine his impressive record.’’
