Ghana’s Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has recommended Ghanaians to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) since a new government will undo the incumbent party’s achievements in the education sector.
He noted that the government has made significant investments in educational institutions at all levels.
To defend and sustain these gains, he urged citizens to vote overwhelmingly for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who will build on President Akufo-Addo’s legacy.
He mentioned that the free SHS policy, for example, has provided countless individuals with access to secondary school.
“The free SHS has been a major policy that has transformed every class of people. It has helped those who are deprived to have access to secondary education. They are those who claim the free SHS policy is a burden on the country, but what they fail to understand is that the policy has helped transform lives.”
According to him, we want a Ghana where we will have the child of a labourer and the child of a judge sit in the same classroom and learn.
He announced that plans were far advanced to construct more science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-based schools.
These schools, he said, would be affiliated with the Grade A schools such as Achimota, PRESEC, and others so that those who are unable to have access to these schools would be admitted into the newly built and affiliated schools.
He reiterated that the new government under Vice President Dr. Bawumia would implement free tertiary education for the children of cocoa farmers.
He also revealed that those who are not children of cocoa farmers would have the opportunity to apply for scholarships so they would have an opportunity to attend tertiary school.
Dr. Osei Adutwum further pledged that the government will provide bursaries to freshmen who will enter tertiary education.
He mocked former President John Mahamas promise to roll out a scheme to offer admission fees for freshmen, stating that it was not sustainable and could allow a lot of students to drop out, adding that the NPP will provide freshmen with assistance to pay their fees through the four years in the university.
“We have to make progress. Some have accused Akufo-Addo of destroying our education system, but the facts and evidence do not support such assertions. Don’t give up on us. Have hope in us and understand that we can change the course of history of this nation. We have started something positive, and Ghana’s future would be beautiful,” he added.
The Minister was speaking on behalf of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at an engagement dubbed ‘Bawumia for Education’ on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
