Political analyst Mr. Alex Emmanuel Nti has opined that several women are shying away from active politics due to the vilification and attacks on their person.
The analyst posited the level of attacks and insults in the Ghanaian political space leaves much to be desired.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he indicated that ‘’the way we do our politics in Ghana is terrible, disgusting, and not encouraging. That is the reason why several women are bold enough to come into the space. The way they are attacked and insulted has discouraged several of them from participating or contesting in the political space’’.
He also asserted that marriage is a barrier for some of the women because their husbands prevent them from engaging in politics.
‘’Some men don’t allow their wives to engage in politics. There are many men who do not want their wives to engage in politics for some reasons. Some have the perception about politics and believe in the long-held perception that the place of women should be in the kitchen. So the men expect their wives to take care of the home and should not have time to engage in politics.’’
He challenged women to gather courage and enter the space so that they could have an impact on their society and the country as a whole.
He also advised men to stop discouraging their wives from entering politics if they have the qualifications.
Mr. Alex Emmanuel Nti urged political parties to empower women, give them the opportunity to serve in leadership positions through a quota system, and allow more women into parliament and other positions to ensure that more women at all levels serve.
“When we build them at all these ranks, we will get them to compete at the highest level, which is the presidency,” he emphasised.
