Former President John Agyekum Kufour has underscored the need for violent free elections.
The former leader says Ghana is a shining example in terms of democracy; hence, we must safeguard this achievement that we are known for.
He cautioned against acts and activities that can trigger violence in the upcoming elections.
Mr. Kufour made the remarks while speaking on a media interview with selected journalists.
He said Ghanaian voters must be allowed to elect who they want, and the parties contesting must also accept the outcome of the results.
He noted that we have an obligation to protect our democracy and ensure that we accept divergent views and opinions without any form of attack or violence against each other.
“Anyone who will forment trouble does not want Ghana to progress or has an agenda to undermine our democracy. In every election year, there is always tension, but what I want to encourage is that we have to avoid any acts of violence. I have been monitoring the campaigning activities. The various candidates are telling Ghanaians what they will do. They are selling their message and explaining their manifesto promises. We should tell the people what we want to do.
We should let the people understand our policies and avoid any acts of violence. Those who would so do not believe in our democracy. Let’s protect our democracy and allow the constitution to function peacefully, and I deratand that the true power belongs to the people.”
