Former President John Agyekum Kufour has urged beneficiaries of the free senior high school policy and first-time voters to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the next elections.
Mr. Kufour noted that the free SHS policy has been very instrumental, and the beneficiaries who would be voting for the first time should endorse the ruling government and its candidate.
He said when voting in an election, you should vote for a leader whose policies will benefit every Ghanaian and not just a few.
“When voting in an election, you must vote for a leader whose policies benefit all Ghanaians, not just your political party. “When you are elected president, you have a responsibility to serve all citizens, not just members of your party,” he stated.
Mr. John Agyekum Kufour delivered the remarks during a media interview with selected journalists on Sunday, November 17, 2024.
He first commended the late former President Jerry John Rawlings for including in the Constitution of Ghana the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE), which provided free basic education for Ghanaians.
According to him, he cannot take all the glory for the implementation of FCUBE because the constitution that was signed by the late Rawlings had FCUBE in it.
He went on to state that it was his government that implemented FCUBE but credited Rawlings for capturing it in the constitution.
Mr. John Agyekum Kufour stated that the NPP is credited with several social intervention policies, including the National Health Insurance Scheme, the free Maternal Health Care policy through which several women went to the hospital to deliver without paying.
The children who were born at the period he said are those who have benefitted from the free SHS policy and will also participate in the upcoming December presidential elections.
“If these children have benefitted from these policies and would be voting in the upcoming elections and they do not know about this history, I am appealing to them to consider someone who will be able to roll out policies that will benefit not just a few but every Ghanaian citizen,” he concluded.
