The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Damapare, has expressed the service’s commitment to the safety of the media during the 2024 general elections.
The IGP gave the assurance when the GPS met with senior journalists and news editors at the police headquarters on Wednesday, 20th November 2024.
He described the media as a key stakeholder in this year’s elections, maintaining they will need the protection and support of the police to ensure they work effectively and efficiently in the upcoming elections.
The IGP underscored the need for Ghana to maintain its democratic credentials, stressing that we have been successful over the years. due to the effective collaboration between institutions like the police and the media.
At the engagement, the IGP informed the media that it has introduced liaison officers for all media houses nationwide to serve as direct links between the police and the media establishments.
The objective of this initiative, he explained, is to enhance the safety of all journalists across the country in their coverage of the general elections.
He also announced that a dedicated toll-free number has been secured in collaboration with telecommunications companies, which will be made available to the public for sharing information with the police.
Meanwhile, he has asked the media to maintain the highest standards of accuracy in their election coverage while avoiding misinformation and disinformation that could undermine national stability.
He was optimistic that the measures adopted by the police will allow the media to carry out their duties without fear, regardless of their location in covering this year’s election.
