The National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Samson Awingobit, has stated that it is their expectation that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will secure the majority of seats on the ninth parliament.
According to him, the party has not only endorsed former President John Dramani Mahama but 250 parliamentary candidates in the constituencies where the PNC has no candidate.
Speaking in an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that the PNC has filed only 25 candidates in the parliamenatry election.
He noted that in the constituencies where the party did not file any parliamentary candidate, it will support the NDC’s candidate.
Mr. Awingobit explained that the party took the decision after it failed to secure a favourable outcome from the lawsuit it filed in court following the disqualification of its presidential candidate.
He disclosed that before they took the decision to endorse Mr. Mahama and the 250 parliamentary candidates of the NDC, it opened its doors to the various parties contesting the elections to dialogue, but only the NDC responded, hence its decision to endorse the party.
“The PNC met yesterday, and by a majority decision, we have endorsed the NDC. Our candidate was disqualified from contesting the presidential election, and we went to court and lost our case, and so last week Wednesday, we held a Functional Executive Committee meeting, and at the meeting, we opened our doors, inviting the various parties to engage us, but the NDC was the only party that responded.”
“We have not only endorsed former President John Dramani Mahama, but we have also endorsed parliamentary candidates of the NDC in the constituencies where we have no parliamentary candidate contesting. The youth of this country are looking forward to a candidate who will be in jobs and restore confidence in the economy.”
He said the decision was taken after careful evaluation of the policies of the parties and their manifestos, adding that all PNC members and those who believed in Bernard Mornarh should vote massively for John Dramani Mahama.
“Where PNC candidates are, they should vote for the PNC, but in constituencies where there are no PNC parliamentary candidates, vote for John Dramani Mahama and the NDC’s parliamenatry candidate in that constituency.
He further asked NDC leadership to extend a helping hand to its party officials to campaign and secure a massive victory for John Mahama and also secure the majority of seats in parliament.
