A former deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Obiri Boahen, has expressed concern over the decision by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to organise their final rallies in Greater Accra and at locations not far from each other.
The private legal practitioner posited it is not a wise security decision, and there must be a compromise to prevent unforeseen incidents.
He noted that it was not advisable for the security institutions to have agreed to allow the parties to organise their final rallies on the same day.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said the security heads must engage with the leadership of both parties for them to agree for one of them to relocate their venue or change the date for the final rally.
He said, “We don’t have to undertake security.” It is not advisable for one party to have a rally at Legon and the other at Madina. If I were to be the Minister for National Security, I would have engaged with the two political parties and encouraged one of them to change venue”.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that there could be a possible clash between supporters of the two political parties; hence, there should be an immediate intervention for the parties to reach a compromise.
“Engage with the political parties and let them compromise. Or they both insist on not changing venues, then encourage them to do it on separate days. The security agencies must be firm and prevent the two parties from holding their rallies on the same day. It is not a good security decision.”
