Election Watch Ghana has condemned Ayawaso West Wuogon Member of Parliament (MP) Madam Lydia Alhassan following a viral video of her and her team sharing food with voters during the Special Voters Exercise held on December 2, 2024.
Mark Ewusi Arko, convener of Election Watch Ghana, described the act as unfortunate and a breach of the electoral laws of Ghana.
To him, the MP has described herself by engaging in this act and must be punished for that.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, he said Madam Lydia Alhassan has disgraced herself. She is the member of Parliament and clearly knows that it is unlawful for you to hand over food and any other gift to someone in line preparing to vote. It influences the person’s decision to vote and also is unlawful.
He said it was good the act had been reported to the special prosecutor so an investigation would be conducted.
’I am happy it has been reported at the OSP for investigation. It is a good thing. We need to find a way to cut all these things out so that democracy does not become too expensive. You cannot give someone in line to vote food or gifts. Are you trying to buy the conscience of the person? We need to deal with these issues.
Meanwhile, he has stated that while the special voting process was generally smooth, there was concern in the northern region, where some voters’ names were missing from the register.
