While we have made some progress since gaining our independence, Michael Donyina Mensah, Executive Director of the Centre for Public Awareness and Opinion (CenPOA), argues the amount of improvement was not substantial enough to warrant celebration.
He argued that judging from where we left off and where we are today, there is much more to be done.
He said the country is lacking quality leaders to help transform the country to the level that will create better and equal opportunities for all.
He further claimed that if you look at the calibre of the candidates running in the forthcoming presidential elections on December 7, you will notice that we lack a visionary leader.
“When you use the upcoming elections as an example, and you look at the list, you will be sad. Because the quality of people contesting is not encouraging. Ghana deserves better and quality leadership.”
He noted that if former President John Dramani Mahama had not entered the contest, we would have concluded that the quality of the contenders was concerning.
He said the former president has his flaws, but comparing him to the other candidates, you will conclude that without him joining the contest, it would have been a disastrous situation for the country.
He recounted how the late Dr. Kwame laid a solid foundation for Ghana’s growth by establishing our own airline, factories, shipping line, and other developmental projects, but in our current state, we have destroyed all these gains made.
“When Kwame Nkrumah was managing the country, he laid a solid foundation. Under him, we have our own airline, shipping line, several factories, and other projects that helped the country transform. But today, we have destroyed these things. We could not maintain them. The quality of leadership under Nkrumah was superior to what we have today.
Kwame Nkrumah was a visionary leader. We no longer have visionary leaders today. Our biggest problem in Ghana today is a leadership problem. We no longer have visionary leaders in Ghana today. Our biggest problem is that we are suffering from a leadership crisis.”
