Executive Director of the Institute for Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), Mr. Peter Bismark Kwofie says Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia deserves to be commended for accepting defeat in the presidential election.
The policy analyst stated that the vice president’s singular act was politically wise and saved the country from all forms of anxiety and tension.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio’s International Election Watch, he said he believes Bawumia demonstrated maturity, especially given that he knew he had lost based on their own collated results.
”If the largest political party will concede defeat based on your own compiled results, do it. So, conceding defeat based on the results is a good thing. Based on the results compiled in 2016, the NPP knew it had won. They declared themselves winners when they knew they were winning, so if they concede defeat in 2024 based on their aggregated results, that is a good thing. If you are in government and are defeated, you should concede at the earliest possible stage. If he had not declared defeat, we would have seen serious tensions, especially since the Electoral Commission failed to declare the results,” he stated.
He emphasised, “For Bawumia to declare defeat is good, and we must commend him for the good work done.” Mahama also conceded defeat early, which was a wise decision. Our democracy is a shining example, and after elections, we still have a country to run, so we must always look beyond the election.
He also disagreed with people that the acceptance of defeat by Bawumia was to pave the way for his political career in 2028.
‘’We have commended Bawumia rather than saying he did do to give him a chance in 2028. Mahama did the same thing, and we never referenced that he wanted power,’’ he added.
