President-elect John Dramani Mahama and outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have today, Wednesday, December 11, 2024, inaugurated the 2024 National Transition Team.
The launch of the Transition Team marks a step in ensuring the peaceful transfer of power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The National Transition Team, a constitutional body mandated to oversee the handover process, will play a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth transfer of power.
This process includes briefing the incoming government on key state matters, facilitating access to vital government data, and coordinating the formal inauguration of the President-elect on January 7, 2025.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition process.
He commended President-elect John Dramani Mahama for his victory in the 2024 presidential election, describing it as a divisive win.
He also commended the Vice President-elect, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, for making history as Ghana’s first female Vice President.
He assured John Dramani Mahama of his full support and that of the government over the transitional process.
He urged the members of the team (both from the outgoing administration and the incoming one) to approach this task with a spirit of collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect.
President Akufo-Addo noted that Ghanaians expect the transitional team to prioritise their interests above all else.
He called on Ghanaians to support the process with patience, understanding, and faith in the institutions that underpin our republic, adding that the strength of our democracy lies not just in the conduct of elections but also in the respect for the outcomes and the orderly handing over of power. Let us continue to build the nation that serves as an inspiration to others. A nation united in its diversity and freedom, steadfast in its pursuit of progress.
President-elect John Dramani, on his part, thanked President Akufo-Addo for the invitation this morning to visit the Office of the President to discuss preliminary issues before the inauguration of the Transition Team and also thanked him for the early briefing he gave him on issues of critical national importance in respect of national security and the economy.
He also commended him for supervising what has been a successful election.
The incoming president said Ghana has done it once again despite the belief of naysayers.
He congratulated those who have been nominated to work on the transitional team, adding that there is a huge expectation that this team will get its work right so that we will have a seamless and smooth transition from one democratically elected government to another.
He said this was in fulfilment of the Presidential Transitional Act, which requests that the joint transitional team work in a cooperative spirit, with mutual respect and oneness to the approach of matters during the transition period.
The purpose, he argued, is to ensure a smooth and peaceful transfer of government administration from one government to another.
He asked the team to work within the confines of the law and fulfil the wishes of the Ghanaian people as expressed in the votes on December 7, 2024.
