Executive Director of the Institute of Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), Peter Bismark Kwofie, says we must commend Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for conceding defeat ahead of the official declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC).
He posited that the early concession by the vice president helped in easing tension.
The policy analyst indicated that the delay in announcing the results was building tension across the country, but the swift concession, even when the EC had not declared the results, was positive.
He stated that in 2016, when the NPP won, they swiftly announced their victory, and that if you were losing, you should accept defeat.
“We need to thank Bawumia. I have really given him the highest respect for conceding defeat early to prevent tension. Tension was building across the country due to the delay in the announcement. Imagine the opposition had claimed victory and the ruling government had also claimed victory; it would have created tension in the country. Kudos to the NPP and the NPP for collating their results and accepting defeat in the elections before the official announcement by the EC.”
He noted this is a good example for our democracy, and we must be proud of ourselves.
Mr. Kwofie also opined that the outcome of the elections reflects the sentiments of Ghanaians and their hate for arrogant, insensitive, and reckless leaders.
He said some of the MPs who lost their seats allowed the arrogance of power and failure to listen to the people to eat them up.
The voters he stated used the elections in communicating to politicians that if they failed the people, they would pay the price during an election.
He has therefore advised politicians to be guided, avoid taking the people for granted, and only focus on doing things that are in the interest of the people and national development.
