Michael Donyina Mensah, executive director of the Centre for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA), a civil society group, believes that the defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 general elections brings an end to what he refers to as Akufo-Addo’s dynasty.
He indicated that the poor performance of the NPP had its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu, as a vote against President Akufo-Addo’s terrible performance.
He stated that although Dr. Bawumia was on the ballot, the voters rejected Akufo-Addo.
Michael Donyina Mensah said persons who held different views from that of the president were always vilified because he hated dissenting views.
He noted that the outgoing president was someone who behaved like an authoritarian leader without allowing others to express their views.
When asked if he was surprised that certain senior officials, ministers, and deputies lost their seats, he responded no, claiming that all persons connected to President Akufo-Addo had lost their seats.
“Bawumia contested the election, but Ghanaians rejected Akufo-Addo. The outcome of the elections is a sign of the collapse of Akufo-Addo’s dynasty, which has been destroyed. Akufo-Addo was not open to dissent. Those who held different views aside from his were vilified, and so they also stayed away from him.”
“I was not surprised by the outcome of the elections. The reason for my lack of surprise is that, upon observation, it becomes clear that anyone closely associated with Akufo-Addo lost the elections. Even his own flagbearer, whom he recruited, suffered defeat. This suggests that the rejection of NPP was not absolute. Rather, it was Akufo-Addo who was primarily rejected. This trend began in 2020, when his party lost approximately 31 seats. Due to term limits, he is ineligible to run again. As he concludes his term and his vice takes over, the party has suffered a loss. This outcome signifies the end of Akufo-Addo’s dynasty.”
