The police have launched an investigation into the alleged assault on three Indian Catholic priests at a fuel station in Nkwanta.
The priests based at Kpassa in the Nkwanta-North District of the Oti Region were brutally beaten by a mob at a fuel station in Nkwanta last Wednesday.
The three Catholic priests are Father Robinson Melkis, Father Frank Henry Jacob, and Father Martin George, all belonging to the Capuchin Friars.
Details emerging indicate that the victims were beaten to such an extent that Father Frank Henry Jacob lost hearing in one of his ears.
A statement issued by the police revealed that the priests were travelling with officials from the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly, including the municipal engineer, to inspect land they had cleared using the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) machinery.
They were, however, confronted by a group of young people who accused them of stealing the machinery.
This led to a confrontation where one of the priests was physically assaulted, leading to him sustaining injuries.
He was later sent to the hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
The statement added that the priests were treated as victims and at no point were they detained as reported by some media platforms.
Meanwhile, IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has contacted the leadership of the Catholic Church and promised them of a thorough probe into the situation.
