Mussa K. Dankwah, the Executive Director and Head of Global Research at Global InfoAnalytics, says it is not entirely true that supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did not come out to vote, hence handing over power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He explained that from the data available, a significant number of the NPP supporters switched and voted for President-elect John Dramani Mahama.
During a meeting with party executives from the Klottey Korley constituency, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia pointed to voter apathy as the key reason behind the party’s defeat.
He claimed that they were the ones that gave the victory to NDC because they didn’t win because their numbers didn’t change from 2020.
But Mussa Darkwah has expressed a different opinion, noting that a significant number of NPP members who voted for Akufo-Addo switched and voted for John Dramani Mahama.
Providing the details, he explained that in the Ashanti, more of JDM voters switched to vote for Bawumia than Nana Addo voters switched to vote for JDM, resulting in a net gain of 8% for DMB.
“While in the North East, the net gain for DMB was 16%. However, JDM made net gains in the rest of the 14 regions, he added.
He said, “The voter apathy was not unique to Ashanti and Eastern regions but across the country. The argument that NPP voters stayed at home is not entirely true. There is strong evidence to suggest that those who turned out to significant proportion who voted in the 2020 election came out to vote against them. Average switch from Nana Addo to Mahama is 22%, while average switch from JDM to DMB is 10%”.

Dymistifying the myth that NPP supporters did not come out to vote, hence, NPP handed over power to NDC.
From the exit poll, we took a closer look at the data, searching for the evidence but we did not find much. We looked at voters who voted for Nana Addo in the 2020 elections but abandoned Dr Bawumia for John Mahama as well as voters who voted for Mahama in 2020 but abandoned him for Dr Bawumia in the 2024 elections.
The empirical fact shows that in the Ashanti, more of JDM voters switched to vote for Bawumia than Nana Addo voters switching to vote for JDM, resulting in a net gain of 8% for DMB. While in the North East, the net gain for DMB was 16%. However, JDM made net gains in the rest of the 14 regions on this measure as summarized as follows:

Savannah 35%
Western 27%
Greater Accra 23%
Central 21%
Upper East 21%
Bono East 21%
Oti 10%
Western North 10%
Ahafo 6%
Upper West 6%
