Majority leader of the Eight parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has stated that in the event that Speaker Alban Bagbin is replaced as Speaker in the ninth parliament, they would prefer someone from within the House and not an outsider.
He praised Speaker Bagbin for his efforts to ensure MPs’ well-being and the progress of House activities.
He posited that although they may have their disagreements with him, he has been an outstanding speaker.
In his view, members welfare has been key to his agenda, and nobody can take that away from him.
‘’Mr. Speaker, the institutional empowerment you’ve given to parliament is equal to none. It’s largely because Mr. Speaker, we have you as a Speaker coming from within,’’ he stated.
He went on to state that he does not know if he would be replaced with a new person and prayed that if the NDC decides to retire Mr. Speaker, they have to select someone from within parliament.
He was optimistic that if the Speaker is retained, it will go a long way to benefit the House.
He then stressed the need for a new speaker to be selected from within, saying,’If the new government decides to bring a new speaker, that new speaker should come from within. We don’t want an outsider. We want someone from within who would understand us.
