Executive Director of the Centre for Public Awareness and Opinion (CenPOA), Michael Donyina Mensah, has suggested to President-elect John Dramani Mahama to scrap the teacher and nursing training allowances because they have outlived their usefulness.
The policy analyst argued that the reason for which the allowance system was introduced was replaced with the student loan trust fund.
He expressed shock as to why Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia made political capital out of the restoration of the allowances when he was in the best position to know it was needless.
“One thing I would want President-elect John Dramani Mahama to consider is scrapping the nursing and teacher training allowances. I was also surprised that a learnt personality like Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia encouraged the payment of the allowances. We have to scrap it. The reason and considering under which the allowances were introduced in the 60s were no longer applicable today.”
He also advised the incoming president to revisit the community day senior school project because it was a policy that will enhance quality education in the secondary sector.
Michael Donyina Mensah warned him to scrutinise every project and policy of the outgoing President Akufo-Addo administration and ensure he rejects the ones that will have no favourable impact on the country.
“President-elect John Dramani Mahama must revisit the community-based secondary schools project. He should go back to the agenda that will have long-term benefits for people and avoid things that will have no positive impact. He should avoid touching every project of the outgoing government because there are some of them that have no benefit to the country, and that was the reason why the NPP was voted out,” he added.
