The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has warned the Ghanaian public to stop making prank calls because it prevents the service from responding to genuine fire outbreaks.
Mr. Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations for the GNFS, revealed that the Service continues to receive prank calls despite calls for Ghanaians to stop the criminal offence.
He stated that the Service has put measures in place to address the issue, and anyone caught doing so will be arrested and prosecuted.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that, while the number of prank calls has decreased in percentage terms for the year 2024, the situation remains alarming in nominal terms.
Mr. Desmond Ackah revealed that they recorded over 30,000 prank calls, a 5.2% decrease from 2023, but that the expectation of seeing a decrease in the figures was not met. The figures remain high. However, we have achieved a 5.2% reduction. It has decreased, but in terms of nominal value, prank calls remain high. There have been over 30,000 prank calls recorded so far. So we’ll ask the Ghanaian public to put an end to the prank calls. You only call us if there is an emergency. If you do not stop making prank calls and we track you down, you will face prosecution”.
Meanwhile, he has expressed the GNFS’ readiness to deal with outbreaks this holiday season.
He stated that it was recently discovered that 50% of their fire engines were faulty, but over 85% of these fire engines had been repaired, and the GNFS was ready to respond to any emergency situations.
