Mr. Desmond Ackah, Head of Public Relations for the Ghana National Fire Service, has advised parents to buy toys for their children to play with instead of allowing them to use gadgets or other items that could easily spark domestic fires.
He lamented that domestic outbreaks were still high and it was important the Ghanaian public take measures to avoid outbreaks.
Mr. Ackah said the GNFS is embarking on public education to avoid outbreaks this festive season.
He said infants, especially those who are crawling, must be prevented from our kitchens since those areas are classified as high-risk areas.
He explained that allowing them to have access to our kitchen would make them turn on the knobs of our stoves, which could trigger fire outbreaks.
“We have to do our best in preventing our infants from entering our kitchens. The kitchens are high-risk areas, and allowing them access could make them turn on the knobs of our gas or electricity stoves that can trigger outbreaks. We should also avoid them having access to matchsticks, crackers, lighters, candles, and other inflammable items that can easily trigger fires. The best approach is to always lock our kitchens to prevent them from entering,” he said.
He then advised the parents to buy toys for their infants and children as a measure to prevent them from engaging in acts that can trigger outbreaks.
“We are appealing to parents who were yet to buy toys for their children to do so. This is the period to do so. It is important to do that to prevent the minors from playing with lighters, matchsticks, and other items that can easily cause a fire outbreak.”
He then advised the public to engage only certified, competent electrical engineers or electricians to handle their wiring systems or audit their electrical installations and do repairs or rewiring when necessary.
“If we also have leaking gas cylinders, we should seek professional help and have them repaired,” he added.
