In his final State of the National Address delivered on January 3, 2025, President Akufo-Addo described the ongoing Bawku conflict as a matter of great distress despite his government’s efforts to address the issue.
According to him, dealing with the Bawku conflict has been a priority during his tenure.
The outgoing president said that although the resolution of the Dagbon conflict is a significant achievement, that of Bawku is a great distress.
He described resolution of the Dagbon crisis as one of the “highwater marks” of his presidency.
He also lamented that Bawku was not the only area experiencing chieftaincy disputes.
He said these crises have become a growing source of insecurity in Ghana.
On the Bawku Crisis he said, “It is a matter of great regret and distress to me personally that, in spite of our best efforts, the Bawku conflict remains unresolved,” he lamented.
“Bawku is, unhappily, not the only area of chieftaincy conflict, and, judging from the experience of other parts of the country, I will have to mark chieftaincy as a growing source of insecurity that would continue to require a lot of attention,” he stated.
He had therefore proposed the need to strengthen the capacities of the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, as well as the National Peace Council.
He was of the view that these institutions would be able to resolve the various crises and ensure peace across the nation.
