John Dramani Mahama has been sworn in as the president of the Republic of Ghana.
President Mahama was given the mandate to govern Ghana for the next four years from January 7, 2025, to January 6, 2029, following the declaration by the Electoral Commission (EC) that he was the winner of the presidential election held on December 7, 2024.
He was sworn in on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra by Chief Justice Justice Esaaba Torkornoo.
Prior to that, the Chief Justice had sworn in Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
President John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 general polls, were held across the country on Saturday, December 7, 2024.
He won the elections in a landslide victory.
According to the EC chairperson, who is the returning officer, Jean Mensa, Mr. John Mahama polled 6,328,397, representing 56.55%, while the vice president and presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured 4,657,304, representing 41.61%.
She, however, explained that the results were collated from 267 constituencies due to outstanding issues with nine constituencies whose results are yet to come in.
According to her, per the EC’s calculation, if the results of the nine constituencies, which come to a little over 947,000 votes, were added to the first runner’s result, it would not change the declaration of John Mahama as the winner.
The difference between Mr. Mahama’s votes and Dr. Bawumia’s was 1,671,093.
The EC chair said the results of the nine constituencies would eventually be collated and added to the results for the Commission’s record.
