President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare, to, with immediate effect, launch an investigation into the deaths of the eight Ghanaians who lost their lives during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
This was contained in a letter issued by the executive secretary of the president, Dr. Callitus Mahama.
The letter said the deaths recorded in the elections left a scar on our democratic process, and it is imperative that justice is served for the victims and their families.
To ensure that the investigations are comprehensive and transparent, the IGPO has been instructed to establish a dedicated investigative task force within the CID to focus solely on these cases.
The IGP has also been asked to collaborate with witnesses and the families affected by the incidents, review the electoral security arrangements, and use forensic evidence to analyse any physical evidence from the crime scenes, including bullet castings, weaponry, and other materials.
