President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at plans to establish a National Education Reform Committee to conduct a comprehensive review of Ghana’s educational system.
The President announced that the committee would be charged with conducting the review at all levels of education, from basic to tertiary.
The move he explained is to strengthen the country’s educational sector and address its evolving needs.
He disclosed this while speaking at the National Convention of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana in Winneba on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
He was of the view that the reforms would help enhance the quality and accessibility of education in Ghana.
“I will set up a planning committee to start working on the National Education Review Conference that I promised. This conference will review our educational system right from kindergarten through the basic to secondary to tertiary to technical and vocational education and identify what the hindrances to quality education are at each level of our educational system.”
Background
During the 2024 campaign, President John Dramani Mahama emphasised the urgent need to review and enhance the free Senior High School/Technical and Vocational Education and Training (SHS/TVET) policy to safeguard quality.
Speaking to stakeholders at a policy dialogue with pre-tertiary teacher unions in Accra in April 2024, Mr. Mahama highlighted the importance of engaging all parties involved to address the numerous challenges and amplify the positive aspects of the free SHS/TVET policy.
He stressed that the policy’s improvement was not just a matter of debate but an imperative for the development and progress of the education sector.
He also proposed the integration of the free SHS Secretariat into the Ghana Education Service Directorates, advocating for closer supervision of the policy implementation.
He explained that by treating the Ghana Education Service as the overseeing body, the NDC flagbearer believed that the implementation of the free SHS/TVET policy could be more effective and efficient.
President Mahama further pledged that the NDC would decentralise the school feeding program.
This move aims to provide better nutrition to students while boosting the local economy. To him, by returning the responsibility for feeding to the schools, he believes that students can receive healthier and more nourishing meals.
