Election Watch Ghana has described the instruction to the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to investigate the 2020 and 2024 election-related deaths as a positive step in the right direction.
Mark Ewusi Arkoh, a leading member of the organisation, posited that Ghana, as a democratic country, should never witness the deaths of even birds.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he indicated that the directive from President John Dramani Mahama will help resolve the unfortunate deaths recorded in the two general elections.
‘’It is a step in the positive direction because over thirty years of our practicing democracy, it should never happen that we go into an election for even birds to die, but we witnessed human beings die in the two elections.’’
He stated that we should not go into elections with people being intimidated, assaulted, and attacked.
Mark Ewusi Arkoh noted that it makes no sense for people to die, adding that’it means that we are still children when it comes to our multiparty democracy. Never again should this happen.
He, however, expressed disappointment in former President Akufo-Addo for failing to even comment on the issue and deal with it when he was in office.
‘’The people who died are from families, and we cannot allow people to die without investigating these issues. We saw people in military uniforms engage in this lawlessness. Those behind it should be investigated and prosecuted. The matter must be investigated, and I think the directive from the president is a step in a positive direction,’’ he added.
He further described the incidents as intentional killings, stating, “These killings were intentional.” They were deliberately killed so that someone could become a Member of Parliament. So let’s investigate. I support the directive”.
