Elections Watch Ghana, an advocacy group, has commended President John Dramani Mahama for reducing the number of ministries from 30 to 23.
The group asserts that this move will help reduce the cost of government business.
Mark Ewusi Arkoh noted that this demonstrates President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to delivering on his pledge to manage the country with a lean government.
He first commended the president for his massive victory, adding that Ghanaians expect things that were not right to be rewritten, just as he promised to reset the country to benefit the Ghanaian people.
He reminded President John Dramani Mahama of fulfilling his 120-day social contract with the Ghanaian people, enumerating several promises and pledges, including his promise to run the leanest government in the Fourth Republic and appoint ministers below the excessive numbers appointed by former President Akufo-Addo.
“Right from the 30 ministries, he has reduced them to 23. I think that he has demonstrated good faith in ensuring that he reduces government expenditure to the barest minimum so that the money we could have spent on the other ministries is channelled into progressive and better projects that will benefit every Ghanaian,” he said on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
Mr. Ewusi Arkoh stated that persons who have watered down the reduction must first examine the benefits derived from the previous ministries.
He noted that some of the ministries in the past were wasteful, useless, and did not address the challenges confronting the nation.
He said that in the previous administration, we had ministries that were not important, including Roads and Highways, Transport, Aviation, and Railways. They were not important and a waste of taxpayers money. So if people like Bright Simons say this is about the sentiments of the Ghanaian people, yes, it is because this is what we want and not what was done in the past”.
