The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed a disturbing incident that occurred in line with their work at the Techiman market while they were containing a fire outbreak.
The service said some individuals were cutting through their water hose while they were fighting the fierce fire.
This was disclosed by Regional Fire Commander Bono East, ACF02 Naomi Adubea Sarpong.
She told Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM that when these individuals were caught, they claimed they were trying to cut the hose to help the fire service fight the fire.
The fire officer described the situation as unfortunate and an interference in their work.
She has therefore advised the Ghanaian public to avoid interfering with the work of the GNFS when they are on a scene to contain an outbreak.
ACF02 Naomi Adubea Sarpong stated that firefighting requires professional skills, which only their trained officers have; hence the public should avoid interfering with their work.
“While at the fire scene, I discovered something so strange that I had never witnessed in my professional work as a firefighter. For the over thirty-four years that I have worked in the service, I have never come across this unfortunate behaviour before. Some persons were cutting through our water hose at the fire scene with a knife. When they were caught, they told us they were trying to fetch water from the hose to help us fight the fire. About three of our water engines were involved. They cut through the water delivery hose of three of our fire engines. This is not good and encourages people to stop.”
Meanwhile she has also revealed that if they had received the emergency on time, they would have managed to prevent the fire from destroying the number of the shops involved.
“The outbreak is true. We received a notice or a report from an individual at 9:59 pm that the Techiman Market was on fire. We quickly dispatched personnel to the scene, which took not more than a minute. We deployed an appliance to the scene and realised the fire was a fierce one. The shops had already been destroyed when we got there. We had to deploy another appliance and call for support from Nkoranza, Kintampo, and Wenchi. So we deployed six fire engines.
“Our personnel are professionals. They managed to contain the fire to prevent it from spreading to other facilities. We have contained the fire. A lot of shops were destroyed. The shops that were destroyed are over 100. Some of them were tabletops, she added.
