A chieftaincy dispute in the Nkwanta district of the Oti region has caused several residents in the area to desert their homes.
Gunshots were fired on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, and Thursday, January 16, 2025, following which three persons have been reported dead.
Others, including infants and children, have sustained injuries and are in the hospital seeking treatment.
Reporting from the area on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Samali Abdul Razark said the update on the matter shows that several residents, out of fear, have deserted the community.
He disclosed that all schools and businesses in the community have all closed and deserted the town.
”All government offices and businesses have been closed, and schools in the area have also shut down following the clashes. The town is now empty, with residents fleeing in fear of their lives and safety,” the reporter added.
Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, confirmed in a Facebook post that a joint military and police team has been deployed to the area to maintain law and order.
He said ‘’On the Nkwanta clashes,believed to stem from a Chieftaincy dispute, a combined team of Police and Military personnel were quickly deployed to restore calm. Additional troops being sent today to enforce law and order’’.
Samali Razark confirmed the presence of the joint police and military team, and more are expected to join them in restoring calm.
