Minister-designate for Education Haruna Iddrisu has said President John Dramani will not cancel the free Senior High School policy but subject it to a review.
The Tamale South MP says the President remains committed to continuing with the policy because it remains one of the boldest steps in transforming the country through education.
The nominee made the remarks when he appeared before the Vetting Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, 2025.
Haruna Iddrisu assured the Ghanaian public that President Mahama intends to increase investment in the education sector to respond to the infrastructure deficit of the education sector, beginning from preschool to the tertiary levels.
‘’Let me assure this committee that President Dramani Mahama has the option to cancel the free SHS. Therefore, those who listened to him in the cause of his campaign to have stated that he will expand free SHS to private schools were to tell Ghanaians that as President of the republic, he wants to give true meaning to Article 25 of the 1992 Constitution and Article 38, which spells out the objectives of our educational policy. The important thing is that he will subject free SHS to a review.
He announced that there would be a stakeholder education forum to discuss the future and state of education in Ghana with an emphasis on the future of the free SHS with particular adequate and sustainable financing.
