Mr. Andrews Asiedu Tetteh, a security analyst, said the incident involving suspected illegal miners and the military was unfortunate but not surprising.
He stated that this was to be expected given how state security and authorities had failed to address the issue of illegal mining and its associated issues.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he accused both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of inciting their supporters to confront security officials.
He averred that the recklessness of some of the politicians influencing their followers to attack officers is a terrible idea that has created these unfortunate deaths at the Obuasi mine of AngloGold Ashanti.
He claimed that when politicians incite their supporters to attack men in uniform and win power, they take advantage of the opportunity to engage in lawlessness in the hope that their party will not be prosecuted.
“Politicians have influenced their followers to engage in this level of lawlessness.” I am also disappointed with IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare for failing to address some of the issues that have escalated. When the NDC was inciting its members, the NPP was in power, but they failed to crack the whip. What has happened may allow some radicals to take advantage of the situation and commit crimes that jeopardise the country’s security.
‘The analyst emphasised the importance of state authorities dealing ruthlessly with those who incite the public to commit violent acts that undermine the country’s security and stability or lead to anarchy.
“We should bring such people to court and prosecute them, and if found guilty, they should be imprisoned or released. If prophets can be arrested and prosecuted for prophecies, why have we refused to prosecute politicians who incite their followers to commit thuggery against soldiers?
The statement issued by President John Dramani Mahama directing for an investigation he said was a step in the right direction but not just enough.
The Obuasi incident, he added, has occurred once or twice, and it was about time we dealt with it once and for all.
