Seven out of the nine persons who died following a clash between soldiers and suspected illegal miners at the Obuasi mine have been laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites.
The bodies of the deceased persons were released to the bereaved families so they could bury them.
The seven were part of a group of suspected illegal miners who allegedly invaded the mines of AngloGold Ashanti and reportedly engaged soldiers guarding the mines in a gunfight, following which seven of them were shot.
A mass burial was held within the hospital grounds, with the Obuasi Chief Imam leading prayers.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) alleged that the illegal miners breached a security fence at one of AngloGold Ashanti’s abandoned concessions and were confronted by military personnel on guard.
They allegedly fired at the soldiers, who also fired back, killing nine, with a soldier also sustaining injuries.
The two remaining deceased persons are still at the mortuary pending an autopsy.
The report after the autopsies are conducted would be handed over to the police, which will be forwarded to the president as part of the ongoing investigations.
President John Dramani Mahama had already asked for an investigation to be conducted into the incident.
He also asked the company to bear the cost for the burial of the deceased persons as well as the cost for the medical bills for the injured persons.
