The government has given one million cedis to help the victims of the Kantamanto Market fire.On January 2, 2025, an outbreak damaged over 7,000 stores in Accra, affecting over 30,000 traders.
The payment fulfilled a pledge made by President John Dramani Mahama when the Kantamanto Traders Association, which included 13 different groups, paid him a courtesy call a week after he officially took office.
On behalf of the President, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah handed over money to the merchants’ leadership.
Meanwhile, the government stated that it was willing to assist in any effort to restore the market into a multi-purpose contemporary facility.
The Chief of Staff emphasised the importance of communication about ideas to restructure the enclave and open up access for swift reaction with proper security to avoid similar tragedies.
Rev. Opoku Afreh, Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, expressed gratitude for the support on behalf of more than 13 groups and highlighted ongoing negotiations with ACCESS Bank to extend a $100 million loan to develop a market.
He did, however, call on the government to intervene in a dispute over the impacted land.
