The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has demanded a thorough validation of data concerning the number of beneficiaries of Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program.
He has raised questions over the figure of beneficiaries of the free senior high school policy, indicating the 5 million announced by the previous government was not accurate.
The Minister paying a visit to the Ministry on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, said it would be important for us to have accurate figures to guide policy discussions and reforms.
Haruna Iddrisu said research available reveals that 3.9 million students have benefitted from the program.
“One of the very first major issues the country must interrogate is the statistical validity of how many Ghanaians have benefitted from Free Senior High School,” he stated.
“I am not saying mine is right, but 5.1 million was misleading because I have looked at the numbers from 2017 to 2023, and I am convinced that the number of students who have benefitted from the Free SHS policy stands at not more than 3.9 million. But I need a validation of that data to begin with,” he said.
He went on to state that the government will convene a National Education Conference to assess the state of education in Ghana and develop actionable reforms.
